Youtube brings out weird things

Posted on Sat, 04/12/2008 - 9:22am by Rob Winikates

So I read the blog TechPresident, and they do a weekly roundup of the political youtube videos of the week.  This week had three that seemed particularly distinctive, including Luke Skywalker endorsing Obama, an operatic plea for Hillary to give up the fight, and a very very odd rap by a republican on the emptiness of Barack's campaign.  On that last one, the verses where he raps, instead of the choruses he lifts from a pro, he sounds really republican.  If Eminem was trying to get out-whited, he just did.  Also, this rappers attacks on McCain and arguing for a Limbaugh presidency is an abrupt oddity at the end, complete with a Sousa-esque march playing behind it.  Just thought I'd add on to Sam's post on Soulja Dean.

Maryland Politics Update (Martin O'Malley is sexy)

Posted on Thu, 02/28/2008 - 11:22pm by Sam Novey

The first Congressional District in Maryland (the eastern shore, basically glorified Delaware) is competitive for the first time in over a decade. Wayne Gilchrest, a eccentric moderate Republic known for his strong support of the environment and his lack of hair; was defeated by a uber conservative state senator Andy Harris in the primary.

But Harris does admire Democratic Governor Martin O'Malley. But not for his policies. For his hot, sexy body.

Harris expressed his appreciation for O'Malley's physical prowess in a recent debate.

He is young and definitely a rising star in the party. Supposedly he also really wants to come to Harvard. Gala guest?

Ron Paul just used Guy Fawkes day to raise over $4 million dollars in one day! Holy Moley!

This man still scares the bejeezus (sp?) out of me. Paul supporters are akin to a cult.

Don't believe me? Check out this Ron Paul Ad

Campaigning in the Age of YouTube

Posted on Fri, 02/09/2007 - 4:58pm by Rob Winikates
Looking at the source of my prior post, I was browsing ThisJustIn.com, apparently a humor segment of HBO. This next post takes the announcement videos of Democratic candidates and tries to give them some pointers on how to make a popular YouTube video, taking off on the LonelyGirl15 videos, crazy dance videos, the Diet Coke and Mentos phenomenon, and the classic physical humor/slapstick humor videos. Enjoy!

Speaking of campaign videos

Posted on Fri, 02/09/2007 - 2:14pm by Cora Currier

Get psyched!!! Obama drops hints about what we all know he'll say tomorrow: http://www.barackobama.com/video/preview/

And if you're not fortunate enough to be in Springfield Illinois tomorrow, here's the live feed:

10:55 AM Eastern / 9:55 AM Central / 8:55 AM Mountain / 7:55 AM Pacific
http://www.barackobama.com

He's counting on us, as bloggers, to spread the message. As John Stewart put it a few weeks ago, "omg, omg, omg, omg, I inspired Barack Obama!!! First I was TIME's person of the year, and now this!"

Why All The Hatin' Over YouTube?

Posted on Tue, 02/06/2007 - 11:31pm by Jess Coggins

Ah, YouTube. Another day, and another crticism. Last week Viacom (the company that owns CBS, MTV, VH1, Comedy Central… channels you watch except for that first one) demanded the website remove all its clips immediately. Now we hear that Jeff Zucker, the new Chief Executive of NBC/Universal (and if I get my job with their research & development sector this summer… my future boss), has announced his growing frustration with the Google-owned one-stop-shop for random-ass videos (although Kiefer Sutherland fighting a Christmas Tree will NEVER get old). But keep in mind that NBC previously said they would be working with YouTube a few months ago.

Most of the top videos right now are all commercials for the Super Bowl. That’s free advertising, basically. And overall I would say YouTube is (mostly) filth-free – probably because of enforced community guidelines. Sure there are the “Britney Flashes Her ****** (Again)” clips, but overall this website could be a lot dirtier.

Well, Mark Cuban really wants to change that. The outspoken Dallas Mavs owner wants everyone to “upload their personal porn collection” in an act of defiance of the Google filtering he sees as irresponsible. I generally think Mark Cuban is pretty awesome. But I think he may not be seeing the big picture with YouTube (which is odd, because he always sees the big picture).

Corporations must start viewing YouTube for what it is: awesome marketing. It requires vigilance to make sure an entire episode of, say, 24 isn’t posted onto the website. But a small clip? Harmless advertising. A clip from a movie could also operate in the same manner.

So, tone down the rhetoric, Mr. Zucker/boss-man.
