Bartlet for Richardson

Posted on Fri, 12/28/2007 - 2:22pm by Will Weingarten

There once was an accomplished president named Dr. Josiah Edward Barlet. Possessing a sharp intellect (he was a Nobel Laureate in economics) a great sense of humor (butterball hotline, anyone?), he was perhaps as ideal a president as one could imagine. According to his Wikipedia entry (West Wing fans, check it out), some of the highlights of his presidency include nominating the first Hispanic supreme court judge, negotiating a peace settlement between Israel and Palestine, creating millions of jobs, strongly supporting alternative energy, and working towards social security reform. Despite his medical condition (MS), he was still strong and resolute.

There was only one major problem: he didn't really exist.

Yet while us West Wing fans may still yearn for a Barlet Presidency, Martin Sheen (the man who tantalized us so) has moved on. CNN reports that Sheen, who has endorsed Bill Richardson's candidacy, will be campaigning for Richardson this weekend in Iowa. According to Sheen, Richardson is "ready for prime-time".

However, Martin Sheen isn't the only West Wing icon set to campaign. The same CNN article states that Toby Ziegler (otherwise known as Richard Schiff, but who calls him that, seriously?) will be campaigning for Biden in Iowa as well.

It's unclear how much celebrity endorsements really help. However, being the mindless American citizen that I am, I'm certainly more likely to listen to something if comes out of the mouth of President Bartlet.

The Primary Season isn't too far away, and we will soon have a better idea of who the  democratic nominee will be. However, no matter who wins the nomination, I'm just hoping that the next president will remember to call the Butterball Hotline.
