On Saturday, April 14th, the Dems have a very special opportunity: a Harvard Dems "Build Day!"

As College Democrats, we often try to help the needy indirectly by campaigning for candidates we believe will make a change. On this Service Day, we'll do the work ourselves. By working with a great organization like Habitat, you'll get to be the change you want to see in the world.

We'll leave Harvard at 7:45am for Lawrence, MA, and work together to build a house with Habitat for Humanity. We'll return by 4:30pm, in plenty of time to get in a nap or some work before dinner.

Sign up here to make sure you get a space. Be sure to include your cell phone number and email address. Deadline for signing up is noon on Sunday, April 8th.

Come help build a house, and put your values to work!

Sunday, April 15, 2007
Location: Sever Hall It's not too late! Even if you didn't sign up, you can still come! Are you involved with community service but have qualms about political campaigning? Are you a campaign veteran looking for a broader skill base? Do you want to change the world, but aren't sure how? Want to be a part of something bigger than yourself? Come and learn practical skills for how to be an effective agent of change, share ideas and perspectives on social change, and debate how best to integrate the realms of social and political methods of progress. You don't have to be a Democrat. You don't have to do community service. You just have to care about making the world better. The Skills Summit is Sunday -- it'll bring together numerous political, community service, advocacy, cultural, and media groups to share with us (and students from several Boston-area schools) the skills you need for social change. Workshops and seminars already confirmed include: debate and impromptu speaking skills; diversity outreach; creative leadership; fundraising and grant-writing; community organizing; social entrepreneurship and social change; and new media, among many others. There'll be a keynote address by 2006 IOP Fellow Alan Khazei (founder of City Year), two workshops, a panel discussion, and finally a “Big Question”-led pizza forum posing the question: “Making Change: Inside or Outside the System?”. Be sure to come out. This is going to be fun.

Where: Dunster JCR This is one opportunity you won't want to miss... Please join the Harvard College Democrats and Students for Hillary this Sunday, April 15th, 4:30-6:30 in the Dunster Junior Common Room, for dinner with Karen Hicks, National Field Director of Hillary '08. Karen Hicks will be telling us about summer job opportunities with Hillary's campaign. Please sign up here, and RSVP to the facebook event. Please bring your resume! Dinner will be served! ALSO, don't miss her skills workshop of how-to hands-on campaigning, 2:00-3:30, Sever Hall 102.
Location: Somewhere On Campus, Probably Hey! Our executive board meetings are open to anyone who wants to come. We usually don't know where they are until roughly the day before or the day of (this is the product of a longstanding Quad-Mather feud, which MATHER WILL WIN EVENTUALLY), so if for whatever reason you want to check it out email me and I'll give you all the requisite info. Minutes are also a matter of record; I can give you copies of minutes for any board or general meeting going back to November, or possibly earlier if they're filed someplace. (Warning: all minutes from after November are taken by me, which means they're probably very profane and contain no useful information.) Seriously, though, come to the board meeting. Your input would be valued, since groupthink tends to mess up our decision-making process. Also we're bored and we want company. (Get it? "Bored"? Ha ha! I slay myself.)

Location: Pound Hall 201 (Law School) Our Dem friends at the Harvard Law School are putting on a series of training sessions for potential young candidates for office. These look like a lot of fun and you should feel free to check them out.
This series of three trainings is designed to help Harvard students think about what it takes to run for office or run a campaign. The first session will provide an overview of the organizational structure of a campaign and give you a better idea of both how to set one up and who is responsible for what. The second will be a series of lightning seminars on the bread and butter parts of a campaign--Message Development; Field; Handling the Press; and Fundraising--that a candidate must understand to be successful. The third will provide a candid look at what it's like running for office and tips young candidates should keep in mind. We will have *free pizza* available at each of the trainings. Please contact Tyler Rosen (trosen@law.harvard.edu) with any questions. RSVPs to Tyler are not necessary but would be appreciated for planning purposes. Training III -- "What It's Like For The Candidate" -- with The Hon. State Rep. David Segal (D-RI) David Segal is currently serving in the Rhode Island state legislature and was previously the youngest-elected member of the Providence city council. He will talk about his personal experience running for office and give guidance on what young candidates should be thinking about. The training is geared toward students who are considering running for office and want an inside view of what it's like as a candidate.
