Today at around 5 p.m. EST, an earthquake of magnitude of 7.0 hit Haiti, about 10 miles southwest of the capital, Port-au-Prince. Since then, six aftershocks have hit, and damage in the country, which lacks construction standards, is severe, bringing down a hospital in the Port-au-Prince district of Petionville. The earthquake, the strongest one in Haiti in more than 250 years, was also felt in Cuba and bordering Dominican Republic, but did not cause major damage in those countries. Since the quake, many families in other countries have found it difficult to contact their relatives in Haiti.
This is true of both my family and other Haitian families I know. I ask that you keep Haiti in your prayers and continue to hope for the best.
